four ways for banks to engage their users

. What about what not to do? Here are three actions we do not recommend:

1. Create trading gamification incentives

Incorporating gamification elements into your banking platform to make investing fun and rewarding may seem like a plus, however, it is extremely tricky to implement in practice. There are many regulatory rules in every country that prevent this sort of gamification in order to protect retail investors – investors need to know they are investing 

 money and that each transaction has financial consequences. We advise banks to avoid trying to integrate challenges, badges, and leader boards to encourage a boost in transactions as this will most likely get shut down by regulators. This year online brokerage Robinhood had to pay a $7.5M USD fine in a settlement with Massachusetts' securities regulators, who say that it encouraged inexperienced investors to place risky trades.

Copy trading, or the automatic replication of trades from traders without the need for social interaction or decision-making, can be tempting as it helps investors diversify their portfolios and in theory gives a bank more opportunity to collect trade fees. (It should not be confused with social trading or social investing, which involves a community where traders actively share information and insights, fostering a collaborative environment.) The risks, however, outweigh these benefits and therefore we advise banks to steer clear of this. Not only is it a hands-off method (this will not encourage actual engagement in the platform), but it is also risky for investors. Investors have different risk tolerances, past performance does not guarantee future results, not everyone has the same access to information – these are just some of the reasons why copy trading is dicey.

Of course, you have the option to not change anything and hope for the best. We don’t suggest this and chances are, your user engagement will not only just stay stagnant, but also decline over time as users flock to competitor platforms that fit their needs and expectations!

 (and avoid), we have one final thought to share – when deciding which action to take, don’t forget to get real feedback on your bank’s products and services. Sometimes, allowing users to give their opinion on their experience gives you all the information you need to improve your app. This can help banks understand the needs and preferences of their customers, which will guide them to make necessary changes to keep users engaged.

Don’t Make These Three Customer Engagement Mistakes 

These are three actions we do not recommend as a bank looking to engage more customers. 

Q2 2024 flew by for a few reasons. We kept busy developing our product to make the best social investing experience possible, launching a new customer, prepping for a future launch (more to come…), and meeting with prospect clients.

1. Expanding Our Customer Base and Enhancing User Experiences

We are excited to announce our partnership with Trove, a Nigerian neobroker. Trove recently launched Trove Social, a new feature powered by our API. This innovative platform allows users to connect with other investors, view portfolios, and learn from their strategies. With Trove Social, users can track market trends, engage in real-time discussions, and benchmark their portfolio performance against the broader market. This launch marks a significant milestone for us, highlighting the global applicability and effectiveness of our API product.

 We have also been working on enhancing the user experience for Placera, one of Sweden's largest financial sites and a subsidiary of Avanza. By optimizing the 

 with a clearer sign-up call-to-action and prompts, we’ve made it easier for Swedish investors to join, discuss, and follow all financial instruments available on the Avanza trading platform. This improvement fosters a more dynamic and engaged community of investors.

2. Advancing Our Product and Online Presence

To provide greater transparency and better decision-making tools for investors, we have updated our financial instrument and portfolio pages with clear Buy & Sell Points. This feature allows users to see the price fluctuations of instruments they own or previously owned, helping them make more informed investment decisions.

This quarter, we had the opportunity to attend several key events, including Money20/20 in the Netherlands and Invest Stuttgart in Germany. We also engaged in multiple partnership meetings across France and Norway. These events allowed us to connect with incredible financial innovators and discuss the future of retail banking and social trading. The excitement and energy we encountered reaffirm our belief in the transformative power of community-driven investing.

As we head into summer, we are proud of the strides we’ve made and eager to recharge and prepare for the second half of the year. We continue to see the impact of our products within our existing clients – driving more trades, increasing platform engagement, and attracting younger audiences.

The Start of Buy & Sell Points

As we reflect on the first quarter of 2024, we’re excited to share some updates, learnings, and achievements over the past three months.

1. User Engagement - Fostering Vibrant Communities

At StockRepublic, we take pride in fostering engaging online investing communities, and the first quarter of 2024 was no exception. In January, we witnessed the extraordinary dedication of our hi!stocks users, who organized a meetup 

 of the app, showcasing the real-world impact of our platform in bringing investors together.

Moreover, we achieved record-breaking levels of engagement across multiple investor communities. In January, comdirect's hi!stocks achieved an all-time high monthly social score with a 15% year-over-year growth. (Social score is a weighted score aggregating posts, replies, reactions, and follows across all the app users.) Then in February, there was a surge in activity on Avanza Placera's forum, with over 3,000 posts recorded in a single day, marking a 16% growth from the previous daily record. These milestones underscore the active participation of retail investors, a positive signal for the year ahead.

2. User Returns - Empowering Financial Growth

Our commitment to democratizing investing and delivering tangible benefits to our users has yielded promising results. An analysis of our hi!stocks user base revealed a notable increase in financial returns following their engagement with our platform. 62.8% of users experienced higher returns after joining hi!stocks, with an average increase of 3.55 percentage points.

At StockRepublic, our mission is to make investing more accessible and transparent for everyone, ultimately providing higher returns. These results show we're on the right track!

3. Product - Making Investing More Inclusive

On the Product front, we’ve released a few exciting improvements in Q1. Most notably, now users can generate polls and share their weekly report directly in the feed to get direct feedback from the community.


With the new poll function, users can write any question they desire and add up to six response options. Once posted, other users can easily vote on their favorite option with a simple click of a button. Additionally, the ability to share one’s weekly report (a roundup of winners & losers and benchmark against the index) allows more transparency into how others are performing on a weekly basis. We’re excited to see how our end-users continue to engage on our apps with these new features!

4. Customers - Captivated by Gen Z's Potential

More and more, we’ve noticed our bank and broker clients have been keenly attuned to the evolving landscape shaped by Generation Z. With their innate affinity for technology, social consciousness, and financial drive, Gen Z represents a demographic that demands attention.

Gen Z's inclination towards social trading is already apparent, as illustrated by a breakdown in one of our client’s user base. One of our clients witnessed a remarkable +235% increase in Gen Z users when comparing their core user base to the user base of their social trading app that was developed by StockRepublic.

As we continue our journey into the second quarter of 2024, we remain steadfast in our commitment to helping our clients activate their users to ultimately drive more financial education, empowerment, and wealth.

Q1 2024 Recap: Record Engagement, Greater Returns & More

The retail investing market has evolved and shifted away from traditional face-to-face financial advice. More and more investors are now embracing online trading platforms like Robinhood, eToro, and TradeRepublic, marking a transition to a faster and more digital world. Everyday investors are turning to social platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok for peer-to-peer investment advice. And that’s not to mention the very active communities on platforms like Reddit and Discord, where investors share detailed insights about their market predictions and activities.

The rise of more diversified financial knowledge, however, is not without its faults. Meme stocks (those that gain popularity among retail investors through social media) are unpredictable and volatile. Experiences of jumping on bandwagons and losing money quickly are all too familiar to some.

Despite the plethora of information, finding a trustworthy source remains challenging. The era of promising overnight wealth with vague stock recommendations is losing credibility. There needs to be legitimacy in the space. This can take form in social trading products (like the ones we at StockRepublic build!). Social trading apps are a legitimate form of sharing financial knowledge and shouldn’t get a bad reputation.

Generation Z (those born between 1997 and 2012) knows this. They are technology obsessed, digitally native, socially conscious, independent, and financially motivated. They take their finances seriously and a majority of them rely on multiple sources, including social platforms, to make investment decisions.

Social trading apps allow customers to get the best possible real-time benchmark, guidance, and inspiration for investing. Investors can compare their returns to those of their peers, learn from top investor strategies, and share their own gains (or losses). These factors instill confidence and empower investors to make informed financial choices.

Introducing Buy and Sell Trends

Dive into real-time market insights with our Buy & Sell Trends—a must-have tool for banks & brokerages to gauge current market sentiments.

Fintech company StockRepublic, a world leader in apps and services for social trading, raises SEK 30 million in a new financing round. The capital round is led by Avanza's subsidiary Placera Media and allows the company to hire more employees, develop its service offering and continue to expand. Outside Sweden, StockRepublic has already established itself in the two largest fintech markets of Germany and the UK.

Placera Media is contributing SEK 15 million after a successful collaboration in which 

StockRepublic has operated and modernized Placera Media's stock forum

 since the beginning of the year with good results. The remaining SEK 15 million comes from existing investors and business angels.

– We are very proud to have Sweden's leading savings platform on board, both as customers and investors. StockRepublic has previously raised capital from customers, so it is a proven and successful model for us. This collaboration brings Avanza closer to us in a very positive way and allows us to continue to develop Avanza's platform with exciting new services, says Fabian Grapengiesser, CEO of StockRepublic.

StockRepublic has gained a firm foothold in Germany, the second largest fintech market in Europe, where it has set up a German company, received funding from the city of Hamburg, and won the award for 

the best financial product of the year for 2023

 with the hi!stocks app, which is developed and operated together with comdirect, part of Commerzbank. In the UK, StockRepublic has signed a customer agreement with the country's second-largest investment platform for private investors, interactive investor, and will establish itself there in earnest over the next six months.

Placera currently has Sweden's largest stock forum in Placera Forum, and together with StockRepublic, we can further develop functionality and user experience.
